Day 1 – San Francisco

Aeroplanes are always fun. The first one we took, from Vancouver to Portland, was awesome – a tiny, 40 seat, propeller plane that got thrown around in the wind a lot. Arriving in Portland airport, the first thing we noticed was the sheer size of people. How do they become twice as fat less than 500 miles south of Vancouver? The flight from Portland to San Francisco was less fun, but on time.

Entering SF on BART (the subway) was interesting. The skies had been beautifully blue nearly all the way down, and then around 3pm we hit the suburbs and become shrouded in thick fog.

Our hostel, the Green Tortoise, is set right by Chinatown, and a remarkable number of strip clubs. Seedy area it might be, but not actually creepy.
